TotalEnergies Cancel Russian Oil Contracts

TotalEnergies, a French oil company, stated Tuesday that it will not renew the Russian crude oil and Russian Gasoil supply contracts for its German refinery. It also said it would source crude oil via Poland and Gasoil in Saudi Arabia.

After it failed to join rivals Shell and BP in its plan to sell oil and gas assets in Russia, the firm has been criticized.

TotalEnergies said in a statement that it would not renew crude supply contracts for its 240,000-barrel-per-day Leuna refinery in Germany, which gets fed with Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline.

Leuna is located far from Germany’s ports close to Leipzig. However, TotalEnergies stated that Leuna would be fed oil via Poland.

TotalEnergies stated in its statement that it had already stopped spot purchases from Russian fuel and that a cessation of its longer-term contracts with Russia would mean that the last oil products will be imported before the end of the year.

TotalEnergies stated that it will continue to supply Europe with liquefied gas from the Yamal plant, in line with European Union’s decision to keep Russian gas supplies at this stage.

It stated that “Contrary oil, it is evident that Europe’s natural gas logistics capabilities make it difficult for Europe to avoid importing Russian gas within the next two-three years without affecting the continent’s energy supplies.”
